Complete workflow walkthrough

This walkthrough maps the user-facing Transit Linux workflow, including advanced options that do not require a Yooz account. It can be used by a new user, a tester or App Review. Use the build-specific review notes supplied with a submitted build for its exact instructions.

Version differences

This guide is based on reviewed development source as of October 9, 2026. It is preparation for a replacement 1.0, not a claim that a replacement has been submitted or approved. The screenshots are real SwiftUI component captures using sample state; they omit window chrome and do not demonstrate live VM behavior.

Windows apps through Wine, native Windows/macOS guests and MCP control are not supported in either column. Curated guest downloads are operating-system data; they do not toggle native Mac app features remotely.

1. Check access

Transit Annual is the access product for App Store installations. On launch, Transit checks access before deciding whether to show Start using Transit setup. Missing or unverifiable access opens setup; an active, verified trial or subscription skips it. Choose Start 7-Day Free Trial if eligible, or Subscribe, to request Apple's confirmation sheet, where the current offer and trial eligibility are shown. The trial starts only after that confirmation. Dismiss setup to inspect the library and local files without access; starting a VM still requires a verified trial or subscription. Transit > Settings > Access keeps access status, Restore Purchases, Manage Subscription and Check Again as appropriate. When access is missing, Set Up Access… returns to the setup window. The Perpetual license card is labeled Soon, with planned US $45.99 pricing; it has no purchase action. TestFlight is free and does not exercise the App Store subscription requirement.

No Transit account or server sign-in is required. Access details.

2. Create Ubuntu

Choose New VM, select Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, review the resource choices and choose Create & Launch after any required download finishes. The first download needs internet access and local storage. GPU acceleration defaults on. The VM's writable disk and processing stay on the Mac. First launch instructions.

3. Use the guest

Click the guest desktop and open Firefox, LibreOffice or Terminal from Ubuntu. Create a small document and save it in the guest's home folder. Try Pause and Resume from the VM toolbar. Use Capture Cursor only when desired, and press Esc to release it. Audio output can be muted/unmuted from the speaker control once available. Controls and input.

4. Inspect display controls

Resize the Mac window and observe proportional guest scaling. More > Fit Window to Guest fits the host window to the guest's current mode. It does not change the guest resolution. Enter fullscreen and use the top strip or View menu to exit. For a replacement containing screenshot export, use the camera control or Shift-Command-S and test Save and Cancel in the Mac sheet.

5. Exchange a file

Shut down the guest and wait for Stopped. Open Configure… > Storage & Sharing > Shared Folder, choose a disposable Mac folder, then start again. Create a file in that folder and open it in Ubuntu at /mnt/shared. Save a guest file there and confirm it appears on the Mac. Shared folder and Storage instructions.

6. Inspect advanced options

  • New VM > Advanced shows Desktop account and Custom boot images. Compatible ARM64 Linux kernel, optional initrd and disk inputs are selected explicitly through Mac file pickers.
  • More > Serial Console opens the guest's serial terminal.
  • Settings > General > Guest SSH access is off by default. When enabled for the next guest start, it exposes only a local 127.0.0.1 listener.
  • More > Export Diagnostics and Settings > Storage > Export Diagnostics save a local file. There is no automatic upload.
  • Settings > Storage controls future VM/download locations and manages downloaded images.

Advanced instructions explain the inputs and scope. These are visible Linux workflows, not extra native guest-platform or Windows-app modes.

7. Finish cleanly

Save work and power off Ubuntu. If Transit requests shutdown and Ubuntu displays a confirmation dialog, confirm it inside the guest. Wait for Stopped, then start the same VM again to check that its document remains. Stop it again before deleting the disposable VM or disconnecting storage.
